Snowball Fight in September?!
Last Friday, students were given three pieces of paper with numbers on them and were told to crumple them up - many could not believe that their teacher was telling them to crumple a piece of paper in class! When students were told next that they were going to use these pieces of paper as snowballs for their snowball fight, jaws dropped. After a couple safety rules were put in place, the fun began!
However, there was a method to my madness. After a whirlwind of snowballs, students were asked to find three snowballs in the class and bring them to the carpet.
Next, students were asked to un-crumple their snowballs and reveal the number on them. Students noticed that one number in their 3-4 digits numbers, was underlined. The job of each student was to go around the carpet and share the number on one of their snowballs and determine what the number would be rounded to depending on what place value was underlined (nearest ten, hundred, or thousand).
Students did a great job using the "Look Next Door" steps and number line strategy to determine what their number would round to.
